# MORNING MELODIES

Exercise

Step 1: Set aside about 30 minutes each morning to explore melodies without worrying about lyrics, structure, or perfection. It’s important to commit to this practice for a longer period of time (perhaps 30 days), as you will feel more at ease with it and become more comfortable with the process each day.

Step 2: Make sure you have your DAW open and you can record yourself (quality doesn’t matter).

Step 3: Start by setting a timer for 5 minutes. Start singing. Improvise freely using your voice. Explore different melodies, rhythms, notes, and phrasing. Let the ideas come naturally without judging or overthinking them. â€‹

Step 4: When the timer ends, listen back to what you created and ask yourself: What could this section be? Does it feel like a verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, or something else? Give it a temporary label based on what feels most natural.

Step 5: Then, set the timer for another 5 minutes and create a new section that contrasts with the first one. Change the melody, energy, rhythm, range, or emotional character. Again, don’t worry about making it perfect; focus on discovering something different. When the timer ends, label this new section as well.

Step 6: Continue alternating between 5-minute improvisation and short moments of reflection, intentionally creating contrast between each new section. Keep going until you have explored enough material to identify potential verse, pre-chorus, chorus, and bridge sections.

Step 7: Once you’ve been writing for 30 minutes, make a final decision about the structure of your melodies. You now have a first melodic draft of your song.
